James Stoke's Legacy
James Stokes was diagnosed with Adrenocortical Carcinoma in early February of 2025. By the time it was discovered, the cancer had already spread into his liver, a major artery, and his lungs. With the help of a friend in healthcare, he was able to begin testing and treatment quickly. Unfortunately, the disease was already too advanced and spread too rapidly. When James started chemo in early March, what had been 3 small spots on his lungs had become masses covering them almost entirely, and a cancerous clot had reached his heart. Within 2 weeks, the clot was filling most of the chamber.
During the next two and a half months, James faced repeated hospital stays, many of them lasting for days at a time. His last day, his anniversary, was spent in the ER. He was released that evening and passed away in his sleep in the early hours on 12 May 2025.
James spent 8 years in the Air Force, including 2 tours of Afghanistan, before beginning a career in tech that eventually brought him to Microsoft. His endless desire to learn fueled both his career and the hobbies he loved. He enjoyed creating projects with his 3D printer, playing video games with his children and friends, and getting outside for walks, hikes, and camping trips with the family. He was thoughtful, generous, and always willing to put others first. During his illness, visits from family and friends were what brought him the most joy.
In loving memory of James Stokes, whose kindness, courage, and curiosity continue to inspire all who knew him.
We are deeply moved by the generosity of everyone who is donating to adrenal cancer research in his memory. Your support helps carry forward James’s legacy and brings hope to countless others fighting this rare disease.
